Infertility

We start talking about infertility if pregnancy has not been successful one year after discontinuing contraception. Sadly, this problem occurs all over the world and often triggers psychological stress for the couple. The reasons are diverse; in general we can say that in one third of couples the woman has difficulty, in one third of couples the male has difficulty and in the remaining third both have a contributory factor. Therefore, it is important that both partners be medically evaluated. In a personal consultation, we will explain which exams and tests would be most relevant, and possibilities for what a suitable therapy would look like.

Medical evaluation

When considering infertility, the first step for men is to conduct a spermiogram. This will show whether the number, shape and mobility of the sperm lie within a normal range. For sperm analysis we refer patients to an external laboratory, and to a urologist if we feel further tests are needed. We recommend several tests for women. Hormone analysis and ultrasound examinations at different times of the menstrual cycle will give us information about the regularity and exact time of ovulation. The ultrasound shows the inner structure of the uterus and the patency of the fallopian tube (HysteroHydroSonography). Of course additional factors contribute to fertility, so the best option is to make an appointment for a personal consultation with us.

Therapy

Determining which therapy is right for you can only be done by analyzing the different contributing factors and evaluating the problem. This is an individual process, and associated burdens on the couple are also very diverse.
Ovulation induction
Ovulation induction is the stimulation of ovulation. This process is supported with medication that is taken to promote maturation of the egg. With ultrasound, the development of the egg follicle is controlled. Depending on the situation, we will recommend intercourse or insemination within a given time period.
Insemination
During insemination, sperm are injected into the woman’s uterus. The procedure is painless and aims to minimize the distance between egg follicles and sperm.
